A42 in Bladenhorst (North Rhine-Westphalia) Junction Points North and South.

The traffic signal systems built by the Signalbaufirma (Traffic Signal Company) Siemens and designed by PVT Essen GmbH went into use on June 27, 2008 at junction points of highway A42 at Castrop-Rauxel (North Rhine-Westphalia) at Bladenhorst North and South. Construction oversight was done by Landesbetrieb Straßenbau NRW, Regional branch: Ruhr.

The system control follows a full traffic flow-dependent set up.
In order to record the traffic flow at each intersection access point, video cameras are utilized for continually observing traffic between the stopping line and a distance of 50 meters.

The following technical devices are incorporated:

B/W Camera Siemens CCBB 1225-LC  24 V AC
Control Module C800 V with SITRAFFIC VIP/P
Camera Casing CHM / CHH 24 V / 20 with temperature control
“Objektiv “ Siemens CLVD1218/4-12

During the night, the light signal systems run at an individualized traffic-dependent interval so that an „all-red-for-an-immediate-green“(Alles-Rot-für-Sofort-Grün) setting can minimize wait times and help drivers avoid avoidable stops.

During the day, the signals are synchronized with one another, keeping the system at a “main-route green” setting until a lane which is being stopped needs to move.

This setting is controlled via a radio clock using a predetermined weekly schedule, keeping it informed of the time of day. The design of this equipment is set up in regulated manner with normal parametrization, allowing for a plethora of on-site modifications. One example being a special traffic-build-up response mechanism planned for freeway exit ramps, which will eventually aid in dispersing traffic slow downs before they reach the freeways, causing larger back ups.

For times with minimal traffic flow the „all-red-for-an-immediate-green“(Alles-Rot-für-Sofort-Grün) setting, will appear and allow for a planned, spontaneous reaction, due to its ability to give clearance or a longer clearance in each direction via video cameras.  

When traffic flow is at full capacity, a regulated flow of traffic combined with accurate video-determined clearance times, will provide each traveler with substantially shorter wait times as well as a noticeably higher transportation quality.
